Purple Sea stars fill the cracks in the rocky shoreline along the Sunshine Coast in the traditional territories of the shíshálh Nation in British Columbia

Shoreline Stars

Sunshine Coast, British Columbia

The Purple Star is the most common intertidal starfish in British Columbia and an important predator species, playing a big role in maintaining health of kelp forests. Unfortunately, rising temperatures are contributing to populations of sea stars wasting away. The future of these stars and the ecosystems in which they live is uncertain.
