Succession

In ecology, succession is when colonise a new environment. In alpine areas which were previously glaciated, new soil is exposed. Summers are short and winters are harsh and the process of succession is slow. Lichens are important as early stage primary succession organisms. Photo © copyright by Anna Morgan.
