Kelp forests are one of the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth growing up to 2 feet in a single day, and their multilevel environment is akin to that of a tropical rainforest. Over 700 different species rely on kelp for habitat, feeding and for nursery and breeding grounds. These giant algae dampen wave action buffering the coastline against erosion and crucially, through photosynthesis, forests are able to sequester vast amounts of carbon from the atmosphere playing an important role in the global battle against climate change. Interestingly, there has been a recent resurgence in psychedelic research exploring the use of psilocybin, a naturally occurring compound found in many fungi, particularly for use in conditions such as treatment-resistant depression.
